The freemium or free-to-play (F2P) business model is still new. Some early adopters have used exploits or tricks to squeeze money from their players while others created what we call a “pay-to-win” experience that practically guarantees victory if you pay money. These tactics may have generated a lot of revenue for developers, but as the market, business model, and expectations mature, players will accept them less and less. They probably won’t go away altogether, but it’s better to get ahead of the curve and start designing and executing smarter games today. Here are 5 examples of what not to do.

OK so its probably not the best title but then first thing Monday is when I came up with it, and that was the first thing on my mind. Of course the second was MC.

Its been a while since there was a good update and a lot of good reasons for that but we are close I tell you, really. OK big the interruption lately has been a little distraction called funding, more precisely re-upping the coffers. To get this done we’ve had to divert our time to writing proposals. As fun as this sounds its required and when the bandwidth is limited, well er, um we go where we think we’ll get cash. I’m just being honest here. All sots of queries on some of those proposals last week (one day there will be a very long dissertation on funding creative projects in Canada) most of which resulted in me writing tons of appendices to the proposals as opposed to writing or even fixing issues with the new adventures on the test server.

Speaking of which, yes there are new adventures, the number one request form people who do our survey, but I have to admit we missed a bit on the game engine part in that one element of the stories has to be bundled within the game code. That’s a big no-no normally but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make things work. Well its creating issues now as sometimes the game code isn’t in a state to update while the story parts are. It creates an interdependency that frankly we need to fix. So once we get this story update out there we’ll pause and get the separation of content in the engine from the game complete.

Have no clue what I’m talking about, don’t worry its just a bit of rambling. Long story short is there are some dirty things we need to clean out of our closet kind of like spring cleaning. Once we do we’ll be able to move forward more rapidly. We’re on it.

Its been a long road in some respects and we’re finally getting the ball rolling ahead again. What was the holdup, well for starters this web site. Its not like I’m bored of looking at it you know just that it was so stripped down for so long that I really didn’t think about it. Kind of a get it up once you get going and then focus on the product thing.

Well I/we did that and now its time to get back to it. More specifically its time to start opening up the communication a bit more and to day was the first step. I’ll try and get something out there each week, try that is.

This is the first time we’ve opened up some place where we can spill what’s going on with our products, our stories and our efforts so I know this will only find a few folks but that doesn’t matter. Let the second wave begin.

Your feedback is important. Its not every day that you get some influence into how a game works, what its all about and what would make it more fun. They are things we do where we spend time to challenge and/or relax and entertain our minds so why not get involved and shape it your way? At Kibble we believe that we need your input to ensure that we create the best possible experiences for your valuable time.

To get there we are quietly putting our games out there in what we call the Community Beta where you get to look at the game in an early state, play it, try a few things out and give us your opinion, good or bad. We want it all. Join our Community and see if you can’t find something interesting to play with. Sign up on our page to get notified of the latest releases and what new features they might bring.

Community Alpha 2.0

Welcome back players, its been a while and its time for another major update. We’re excited about welcoming you back to this version as we believe most of the single player features to create and navigate your story are here. We’ve waited until now to give you one of the most requested features, customizable characters.

Our final ‘Alpha’ is now OPEN!. Your feedback was extremely useful through the latest test session and we have taken your feedback to revise a number of things. Things we have in the game:

Customizable avatars

Career, Job and skill development

iPad compatibility

Some stuff we are working towards in coming releases:

Sharing individual panels with friends

Facebook and Google App integration.

Your inventory of custom avatar items, tools (skill powerups) and time accelerators

Multi-player co-op – forming teams of friends to complete larger more complex adventures

More of the story unveiled

Mini-games challenges for job and skill upgrades

This installment is focused on your avatar and the tools to help you craft your look. We’re taking that avatar and starting to introduce them in the comics:

Adventures are broken up into comic issues just like a print version.

Episodes and the story are packaged up into adventures to make it easier to understand where you are in the story.

Scenes are types of adventures that you can view and read, we’ve made the progress through scenes easier than ever to navigate.

The base story is set up to better explain what’s going on early.

Lots and lots of bug fixes.

Caveats or Things You Should Know:

Timer refresh stickiness, if within certain tasks of challenges a timer gets stuck at zero without offering a reward, often the easiest thing to do (until we can fix it of course) is to simply step back one panel and forward again.

All player data has been reset, for the last time. Players can always start over to experience new adventures we add to the beginning through the “start over” option in the options menu, but going forward we’re going to start to concentrate on adding more adventures, more often.
——————————————————————————

Enjoy the results, there are more comics to view, more adventures to have before we get to the social sharing and co-operative parts of the game. This is a casual game about storytelling, choose your own adventure and flip through the resulting comic you can share with friends.
